This is a glossary of terms you will find in use in and around Yuku. Thanks to the gethelp admins - Arizona, Cedar, Chris W962 and favafoyo - who compiled this list.

A
- Account: Your account is created when you sign up with Yuku. You can have up to five profiles under that account. Your account has an email address and a password. Your account settings are in the user menu which you can access by clicking on the menu button in the top right hand corner. The account detail box is on the left hand side, under your avatar.
- Administrator: An administrator is someone who has all the powers of a global board moderator and optionally one or more admin powers, for example changing skins, managing members, viewing the log.
- Admin Menu button: The admin menu button is the tab in your menu that allows you to access settings and board controls. You can find it by clicking on the menu button in the top right hand corner, and then on the "admin menu" link in the set of tabs, approximately left of center, next to the "recent posts" tab in the menu that appears when you click the menu button. This button will only appear when you are on a domain at which you have admin powers.
- Admin Control Panel: The admin main page, accessible via the "admin" link on the navigation bar.
- Author: The author is the person who has written a particular post.
- Auto Titles: Also known as Member Levels or Ranks. These are the titles that display on the left of member's posts. They change according to post count, membership or kudos.
- Avatar: Also known as a Personal Picture. The avatar image can be a picture of you, an animated graphic, or any other image. It will automatically be resized to 100x100 pixels, which can reduce quality if the resize is dramatic. It is recommended to use an image that is 100x100 pixels already, or close to it to preserve quality. See Profile Settings to change your avatar.

B
- Ban: To ban is to disallow a profile, an IP address or an email address to post at a board. Banning can also be set to disallow the particular profile, IP or email address from accessing/seeing the board all together. It is often used as the last resort for a member who refuses to adhere to or comply with board rules, regulations or administrative requests. How to ban a member.
- Banner: The image that is visible at the top of a board, and generally contains the name or logo of the board. How to add a banner.
- BBCode: Abbreviation for "bulletin board code", also known as ezCodes. These codes allow you to style or format your response. See BBCode.
- Beta: Software that is not yet complete and is still undergoing major changes. Yuku is currently a beta product.
- Block: An account can be blocked by clicking on the User Info that is visible beside the account username, and then selecting block in the set of links that appears for that user, or by going to that user's profile to select the "block" button.
- Blocks: Every profile is divided into two columns containing various blocks. There are many different types of block, for example, Mini Profile, HTML, Friends. Also see Managing Profile Blocks
- Blog: A blog is an online diary or journal. All profiles come with a blog block that can be enabled.
- Blog This: The checkbox that says "Blog This" when you are adding a reply or new topic allows you to automatically create a new entry in your blog with the content of the post you are making on any board.
- Board: A board (or message board, domain or community) is a collection of categories and forums where people can post. See Message Boards Overview.
- Breadcrumbs: Breadcrumbs are the list of links at the top and bottom of a page indicating the "path" that you followed to get to the current page. The usual order of breadcrumbs is "Main Page" > "Category" > "Forum" > "Topic". You may also see "Main Page" > "Extra Page" where "Extra Page" can be "Calendar" or "Active Members", for example.
- Browser: A browser is what you use to browse websites online. Common browsers are Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari, AOL Browser, Netscape and many more. You can find out what browser and version you are using most usually by clicking "Help" > "About" while the browser is running.
- Bug: An error in software which causes things to go wrong, unexpected behaviour and other problems. Bugs with Yuku can be reported at the bug forum.

C
- Cache: The cache is where the browser stores webpages, images, css files etc so speed up the page load next time you view that page. To get a fresh, uncached page, you can do a hard refresh or clear your cache.
- Category: A category is a group of forums. See Managing Categories, Forums & Chat.
- Chat: Short for chat room. Chat rooms can be added to categories and controlled with their own security settings.
- Community: The group of members, moderators and admin that are connected to each other via a board. Also called a "board" or "domain".
- CSS: Stands for Cascading Style Sheets. CSS forums part of Yuku skins and is responsible for how your community looks. CSS can change the colours, borders, fonts and backgrounds for your board. See Skins.

D
- Developer: A member of the Yuku staff responsible for creating new features and fixing bugs.
- Domain: Another name for a Message Board or Community.
- Domain Stats: These are the statistics about your community. They can be seen in the Community Stats box at the bottom of the main page or on the community profile page. Admins can also see more detailed stats in their admin controls.
- Download: To save a file (image, music, program) from the internet to the hard drive of your computer.

E
- Editor: The editor can be where you type your posts (also called post editor) or where you edit skins (also called skin editor).
- Email: A service provided by your ISP (such as AOL) or by a free online service (such as Hotmail or Yahoo).
- Emoticons: Also known as smilies, are the graphics that replace text such as :) or :( in posts.
- Export: Exporting is to save and download a copy of a profile or community skin. Skins are exported as XML files.
- Extension: Also known as an add-on, is a small program that can be downloaded and installed in the Firefox web browser. Yuku has its own add-on you can install to integrate your browser and your account.

F
- FAQ: This is a "Frequently Asked Question". Communities may provide a basic FAQ to get you familiar with their rules. The Yuku FAQ explains all about the company.
- Favicon: A favicon is a small 16×16 pixel icon that appears in the address bar of a browser. If you go to the Yuku homepage you will see a small butterfly image. Mozilla browsers (Firefox, Netscape, etc), Internet Explorer and Safari also use the favicon when you add the website to your favourites/bookmarks.
- Feature Voter: The Feature Voter is where you can vote on what features you think should be built.
- FF / FF2: A common abbreviation for Mozilla Firefox web browser.
- Filter: A method of narrowing down search results. In a forum, topic tags can be used to filter topics. Admins can filter members in their member management.
- Font: The appearance of text on a page. Common font names are Arial, Times New Roman, Tahoma, Comic Sans.
- Footer: Also known as Custom Footer, is the area at the bottom of a page. Putting code in the footer of a skin, it will appear at the bottom of the page, below your forums.
- Forum: A forum is a collection of topics and polls that people have started.
- Forum Tools: Admins and mods of a board will see a dropdown called Forum Tools in any forum they have powers. The dropdown menu allows them to perform actions such as stickying, closing and moving a topic.
- Friend: These are other Yuku members that you have added to the Friends block in your profile.

G
- GetHelp: gethelp is an official, volunteer run, Yuku help community. You can find help and FAQs from experienced Yuku members there.
- Global Account: A global account is an account that has a .u extension. When posting on any board, the profile link will appear as just "username" and the profile url will be http://username.u.yuku.com
- Global Ban: A global ban means that the account has been permanently disabled and can no longer be used on any board. A global ban results in breaking the Yuku Terms of Use.

- Hall of Fame: The Hall of Fame the Top Profiles and Rising Stars on Yuku ranked according to their Kudos.
- Hard Refresh: This means you force your browser to reload the page you are viewing without using the cache. To do a hard refresh press Ctrl + F5 while viewing the page.
- Header: Also known as Custom Header, is the area at the top of a page. Putting code in the header of a skin, it will appear at the top of the page, above your forums.
- Hide: An admin or moderator can hide a topic or reply from public view by clicking the Hide link in posts. The hidden post is simply not displayed to ordinary members of the board.
- Hot Topic: A hot topic is a topic that has gained a certain amount of replies. The number of replies that must be made is set by an admin and the topic will be displayed with a special icon set in the custom images.
- HTML: HTML is code you can add to your skins that appears on your board. Sidebars, tables, etc. are made up of HTML.
- Hyperlink: More commonly known as a link, is what you click on to navigate around Yuku and the internet. You can add links to your posts with the WYSIWYG Post Editor or using BBCode.

I
- Icon: A small graphic that represents a specific file, directory, window, option, or program. For instance, the "new message" icon that visually represents that there's been a new response to a thread, or the "recycling" icon in the images folders that represents the delete option.
- IE / IE6 / IE7: A common abbreviation for Microsoft Internet Explorer (versions 6 and 7).
- Ignore: On a community, you can actively ignore a user from the Interact menu on their posts. Clicking Ignore will mean all that users posts are collapsed and/or faded from view.
- Import: Importing is the process of uploading a saved skin (see Export) from your computer to your community skins or your personal profile skins.
- Inbox: This is where all of the private messages in your account are displayed.
- Interact (Menu): An interact menu appears in two places. In profiles the Interact Menu appears below the avatar in the mini profile block. You will not see an Interact Menu on your own profile. The other Interact Menu appears on posts, in the area that displays custom titles etc. Both Interact Menus allow for quick interaction with other users.
- Invite: You can invite friends using the links in the navigation menu. This will email them and ask them to sign up with Yuku.
- IP Address: This is a unique number that identifies you online. When you post your IP address is logged and can be used by admins to look up or ban you from their board. Cable or DSL users typically have fixed IP addresses, where as dial up users get a new address each time they log on. AOL is known to recycle IP addresses which makes banning AOL users difficult.

- Javascript: Javascript is a programming language that is most often used to add even more customization to boards. Javascript allows customization that is not available only using HTML and CSS. Available scripts can be found in the script library.
- Jump Menu: A menu that appears at the bottom of forums and topics that allow quick access to other forums on the same board.

- Kudos: Kudos can be given to a user or to a topic. Kudos given to users and to the authors of topics contribute to their position in the Hall of Fame.

- Labels: On a community, labels or titles refers to any of the default English text, such as table headings or button text.
- Lead: The Lead post is the first post in a topic, identified by the word Lead to the right of the topic title. By starting a new topic, you are creating a new lead.
- Library: This can refer to the Community Skins Library, the Profile Skins Library or the Script Library
- Lists: Members can be added to a list in the member management section. Lists do not give members any special powers or privileges they are only for storing certain members together for easy editing.
- Local Account: A local account does not have a .u extension. When posting on any board other other than their home board, their profile link will appear as "username.boardname". When posting on their home board (boardname), their profile link will just be "username".
- Log: The admin log displays a list of all the admin and moderator actions performed on your board.

M
- MB2: Stands for Message Boards 2.0, and is an old term for the current Yuku message board format. It is a play on Web 2.0.
- MBA: Stands for "Membership By Approval" and means users must fill in an application form before they are allowed access. Individual forums or a whole board can be made MBA.
- Media: Typically media refers to flash videos and music. Media can be embedded in skins, in your profile (using the media block) and in posts (using the post editor).
- Member: Someone who has posted at a board or who has been granted access to an MBA board.
- Menu: The navigation menu is the bar that appears across the top of all Yuku pages. When logged in it allows access to all of your account and/or admin controls. When not logged in it provides a quick login form.
- Migration: ezboard users can migrate their ezboard accounts to Yuku so they can continue posting without registering a new account. ezboard owners can migrate their boards to Yuku in which all forums, posts, members etc are transferred.
- Moderator: Moderators are members of your board who have less power than an administrator and more power than a member. Moderators can perform actions such as opening and closing and moving topics. See forum security for how to choose moderator permissions.

N
- Navigation (Menu): The navigation menu or Nav Bar, is the bar that appears across the top of all Yuku pages. When logged in it allows access to all of your account and/or admin controls. When not logged in it provides a quick login form.
- Newsfeed: A newsfeed is another name for RSS. Boards, forums, topics, blogs and calendars all have their own RSS feed allowing users to subscribe to them in a third party program such as Google Reader.

O
- Online/Offline: This is whether a member is currently logged in to their Yuku account or not. A green online icon appears in profiles of friends and posts to indicate if a user is currently online. A board can choose their own online icons using the custom images for their skins.
- Onionskin: onionskins are css classes for 3 divs that wrap around each block that is used on both boards and profiles. They can be used to make multiple borders, or use intricate images for round corners or visual effects. For help with this, see the Skins community help forums.

P
- Pager: This appears at the top of forums and topics that have more than one page of topics or replies. The pager is used to navigate to a specific page or the previous/next page from the current one.
- Pending: On an MBA board or for an MBA forum, when someone applies for membership they become a pending members. Pending members do not have access until they are approved.
- Photobucket: Photobucket is an online image and video hosting service. You can link your Photobucket account with your Yuku account so that you can add images from Photobucket to your posts with the click of a button.
- PM: Stands for Private Message. All users have access to the private messaging system.
- Post Editor: The WYSIWYG Post Editor for creating topics and adding replies, sending private messages and adding comments to profiles.
- Posticon: A posticon is an image that appears to the left of topic titles in a forum if a user chooses to use a posticon at the time of creating a new topic.
- Profanity Filter: A list of words (offensive or not) that an admin chooses to replace in posts with censored text, for example &#@$.
- Profile: This is the online identity (name) you post as. See also Creating a Profile.
- Promote: On the account menu is a tab for Promote. On this page are images you can use in signatures and webpages to promote your profiles, galleries and boards.
- Push: A push is when the Yuku network undergoes an update, new code is "pushed" to all servers. This may cause some downtime with an accompanied image explaining an update is happening.

- Quick Reply: The text box at the bottom of a topic page allowing users to submit a new reply without having to load the add reply page.

R
- Replies: Posts submitted in response to a new topic (lead post). Topics can have many pages of replies which appear in ascending date order.
- Restore: When a topic or reply is deleted by an admin or moderator, an admin can restore or un-delete it by using the link found in the admin log.
- RSS: Really Simple Syndication is a method of keeping up-to-date with new posts in a forum, or replies to a topic, etc. See also RSS Feeds.

- Screen Cap: A screen cap, screen shot or just cap, is a capture/picture of your computer screen as you see it. To learn how to take a screen cap, read this FAQ.
- Screening: Forums that are set to Moderator Screening means any topics or replies that are posted must be approved and shown by board administrators or the forum moderator before they are publicly visible.
- Settings: This can either refer to account settings for an individual user or to board settings for an admin.
- Show: The Show link appears on topics that have been hidden. The Show function is only available to admins and mods.
- Sidebar: A sidebar is custom HTML that many users add to their skins which appears as a column to the left or right of their board.
- Skin: Skins are how a community is customized. The skin is actually a collection of CSS, HTML and Custom Images. The CSS provides colours, borders, backgrounds, fonts etc. The HTML provides layout, text, images etc. Custom images appear as buttons like New Topic and Add Reply etc.
- Skins: If someone refers you to Skins, then they probably mean the Skins & CSS Help board where you can get help with all your customization problems.
- Skin Map: This is a page that displays exactly what skins are applied to which forums on a board, or which skins are applied to which profiles.
- Smilies: Also known as emoticons, are the graphics that replace text such as :) or :( in posts.
- Social Bookmarks: Or just Bookmarks are external websites that allow you to share links to boards, forums and topics.
- Spam: Spam on a message board are multiple unwanted advertisements for other websites. Individuals can also receive spam private messages. In the case of receiving unwanted PMs, those messages can be marked as spam and automatically sent to a special spam folder.
- Sticky: Sometimes referred to as pinned, sticky topics are those that always appear at the top of the list of topics within a forum. They are indicated by the text "Sticky Topic" or by a custom icon.
- Subscribe: Users can subscribe to boards, forums and topics by RSS Feeds or by Email. Email subscriptions notify the user by email of new activity either once a day (daily digest) or immediately. Individual email subscriptions can be managed from the Account Settings.
- Suggestion Box: The Suggestion Box is where you can submit ideas for features that you would like to see added to the system.
- Support: support is the main official board at Yuku. Support can also refer to the support account of an individual board. Members of a board, logged in or out, can submit help requests to the support account. All administrators can log in to the support account.

- Tags: Tags are additional search words or phrases that can be used to filter topics within a forum, private messages, blog posts or images. Search tags appear inside each forum where more than 5 tags have been used, clicking on the tag names will begin the filtering process. Yuku Find tags are also available for admins. These tags are used to find boards in Yuku Find.
- TDF: Is an ezboard term meaning Theme Definition File and is how you export ezboard themes. To import and convert an ezboard theme to a Yuku skin follow these instructions.
- Teaser: MBA forums can be set as teaser forums, this means people without access can see topic titles but still must apply to read. See Forum Access for more details.
- Ticket: A help ticket is how you contact Yuku customer services.
- Topic: A topic consists of a lead post and any number of replies. Topics can also be called threads.
- Topic Tools: Admins and moderators will see a dropdown at the top of a topic in forums they have powers. The Topic Tools contain many of the same commands the Forum Tools show with additional commands such as Hide and Split.

- Upload: To copy a file from your computer to an online website such as Yuku or Photobucket. See also Uploading Images to your Albums.
- URL: The address of the website you are browsing. The URL can be copied from the address bar at the top of the browser.
- User Stats: Along with visitor stats, these are showing in a user's profile below their avatar. The stats relate to that user's profile and show their total posts, member since, last post and last seen.

- Views: The number of times a topic has been viewed.
- Visitor Stats: Along with user stats, these are shown in a user's profile below their avatar. The visitor stats show how many users are currently viewing and have viewed the profile that day and in total.

- Warn: Admins of a community can warn members several times before resorting to banning.
- Wiki: A Wiki is a type of website which contains content that is generated through user submissions. The Yuku Help files are in a Wiki format.
- Wrapper: This is a class used within the css of your board. The wrapper is a div that wraps around the whole page.
- WYSIWYG: This means What You See Is What You Get. There are two types of WYSIWYG editor in use on Yuku. The WYSIWYG Post Editor is what you use to write posts and private messages. It functions like a Word Processing program (eg Microsoft Word), you can see exactly how the message is formatted while you write it. The other WYSIWYG is the Skin wysiwyg editor. It allows you to create and edit skins without knowing or understanding CSS.

- XML: XML is a special file type that Yuku skins need to be exported (downloaded to your computer) as. If needed, they can be opened in a text editor or web browser.

- Yuku: Yuku is the message board service this help wiki relates to, and is the next generation of ezboard. The name comes from the Aboriginal word for tree. Yuku Homepage.
